CLOSE ENCOUNTERS at OUT OF SIGHT

For our first group exhibition at Out of Sight, during Close Encounters Chapter 1 at Antwerp Art Weekend 2024, we reached back once again to a text by Ursula K. Le Guin: “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas”. It tells the story of a seemingly perfect city, Omelas, where the happiness of the people is built on the suffering of a single child. The story raises questions about the ethical foundations of a utopian society and the individual’s responsibility in the face of collective well-being.

Works in the exhibition: Zonder meer by Meltse Van Coillie, Revolutionary letters by Jana Coorevits, Charlotte Van den Broeck and Magali Coremans, Offing by Lydia Hannah Debeer, For now I play along by Ans Mertens, Now do you believe them? by Alex Schuurbiers, The Remembered Film by Isabelle Tollenaere & All the people and firecrackers by Kathy Vanhout.
